Why have an agent when you can join an online talent directory?

There’s plenty of online talent directories these days promising to make people instant stars. Many of them offer free signup but then ask you to pay a monthly fee to become a full member.

None of the casting consultants we speak to waste their time with these directories. In the film and television industry, time is money and posting a job on these public directories opens the production up to thousands of irrelevant applications. Many of those are from people who don’t meet the criteria for the role. The casting consultant needs to spend days sifting through all the results and then hope that the people they pick from there are reliable. Any consultants that try these directories, give up on them pretty quickly.

When the casting consultants call MCTV for talent, we find the people who match the brief and only send those. We also know that our talent are reliable and will turn up if asked. We also handle all the communication with the talent which is another massive timesaving on any large production. That’s why all the serious productions use an agent like MCTV.

So what do you end up with on online talent directories? Unpaid work and small productions where the chance of landing a paid role are very small. Then, if you do get a paid role, you don’t have an agent to negotiate the right fees and rollovers and other terms and conditions that are part of working as an actor. There’s a place for online talent directories for sure, but it’s important to understand what you are getting into. You should also be careful that you are not being taken advantage of. New vaccination commercial with some nudity

Last week, we were submitting people for a new commercial about vaccination for pneumonia. The shoot will be in the style similar to these famous Anne Geddes pictures but with parents included. The only catch is that the parents need to be comfortable being photographed nude or partially nude. It’s not the first time we have had to ask our talent if they are comfortable with what might be embarrassing or awkward for some. We always handle it sensitively and anyone who is not comfortable with it just lets us know and we move on to the next job.

Jackie Chan filming Bleeding Steel in Sydney

We have been submitting hundreds of people for a new Jackie Chan film that will be shooting in Sydney and China soon. Jackie Chan has been a long time supporter of Australia having lived in Canberra himself as a young lad. So great to see him bring another production down under.

ABC’s Cleverman already Renewed for Second Season

Thanks in part to the great work from around eighty MCTV people, Cleverman has already been renewed for a second season. The reviews of the pilot episode are fantastic both locally and abroad. It’s so great to see these productions heading overseas too with it being shown on Sundance TV in the US and BBC Three in the UK.

ABC’s new indigenous superhero series is off to a flying start, with Cleverman already renewed for a second season after it premiered to rave reviews both at home and abroad.

Top secret miniseries to start filming from 14th June

We have been submitting hundreds of people for a new miniseries due to start filming in a couple of weeks. I can’t give you any clues about the subject matter other than what you might be able to pick up from this image. We expect that just like all theotehr films and miniseries we are working on at the moment there will be plenty of opportunity for people of all looks, ages and ethnic backgrounds.

Featured Role on Telstra Commercial

Congratulations to Fran Doolan who has landed a featured role on a new Telstra Commercial as a grandmother. Being a featured role she will be paid very well for her time and if the commercial is really successful she will end up earning rollovers too. This is further proof that you don’t need to be young and gorgeous to get great paying jobs in this industry. There will always be roles for young and gorgeous but there are roles for everyone else too. Dance Academy: The Movie begins shooting in Sydney

There’s been an exciting lead up to production on Dance Academy the Movie. With MCTV submitting a number of extreme ballerinas a couple of months back and now shooting has finally begun. Just this week we had about 20 people on set in a very glamorous scene, there was no need for ballet skills for those 20 though. There should be much more coming through over the next few months.
