La Brea Stops Traffic

May 6, 2021/in Acting and Extras Work in Sydney /by MCTV

Filming has commenced on Universal Studios new 10 part series, La Brea. The show, about a massive sinkhole appearing in downtown LA that is a portal to another dimension – 10,000 years in the past, is the biggest production in Victoria in over 10 years. The project is expected to add over $60 million in revenue to the state and require the talents of 290 cast and crew plus 1,000 extras.

Relocation of the shoot to Australia has been supported by the State and Federal Government film incentive packages. Speaking to the SMH, Senior VP of production for Universal, Richard Ross also noted that the cost of COVID testing on productions here added $300,000 per episode. In the US it’s twice that, due to a more regular testing schedule. Over the course of 10 episodes, this adds up to a $3 million saving.

Mr Ross has also indicated NBC Universal could  soon be making up to 4 shows per year, worth as much as $200 million, in Australia. He also indicated that the company’s move to Australia “would go beyond COVID”, which is great news for the local film production industry. According to Mr Ross, there are so many productions happening in Australia now, the production crew has had to make a soundstage out of an “old car maintenance place” as all the other studios in Melbourne were already in use. Roads were also closed in Port Melbourne this week to make way for the production.

Given the large scale of the production, interstate submissions have been happening. Good luck to everyone from MCTV who has been submitted!

Thor: Love and Thunder is still filming, with rumours flying that Sacha Baron Cohen may have a role before the production finishes. Cohen and wife Isla Fischer (Wolf Like Me) were spotted dining in Sydney with Russell Crowe (Zeus) and Christian Bale (Gorr) from the Marvel epic. The Thor cast are making headlines wherever they go… from Matt Damon grabbing coffee in Jugiong to Chris Hemsworth partying in Byron Bay.

MCTV is still submitting for the movie. It’s thrilling to be involved in a production this big with so many amazing actors.

Speaking of wake up calls, working in film and TV means being flexible with work times. Productions are often shot early in the morning or late at night to take advantage of quiet streets and locations that are otherwise used during the day. Extras work can be a great way to supplement your regular income or fill in time between jobs.

MCTV are always submitting for a wide variety of roles. Read our FAQs for more details.

Dragana Gambiroza-Lazic

I’ve been with MCTV for a few years now and found them wonderful. I’ve had a much better experience than with my last agency and am particularly impressed by their management of my daughter through Joey’s

Elizabeth Bouris

Within my first month, I’ve been considered 3 times, got an audition for a TVC, and then a call back. And even a job offer with a leading Bank.
I signed my children with the agency & while I was at the office, Paul gave us a casting for the kids the same afternoon.

M.C.T.V has been very good to me for over three years now! I do appreciate their efforts in finding me work in four major motion pictures and other jobs
