Sigourney Stars in Sydney

October 20, 2021/in Acting and Extras Work in Sydney /by MCTV

‘The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart’ has started filming in Sydney with film legend Sigourney Weaver leading the production. The Daily Mail has published photos of Weaver filming on a Sydney flower farm.

The 7 part series for Amazon Prime is based on the highly successful Aussie novel of the same name by Holly Ringland. The book tells the story of a young girl whose violent childhood casts a dark shadow over her adult life. After a family tragedy, nine-year-old Alice Hart is taken in by her estranged grandmother, June, a flower farmer who raises Alice on the language of Australian native flowers, a way to say the things that are too hard to speak.

The series is being produced by Made up Stories (‘Big Little Lies’, ‘Penguin Bloom‘). Sigourney Weaver is also Executive Producing the show, which has been adapted for the screen by Australian writer Sarah Lambert (Lambs of God). Glendyn Ivin (The Cry) is directing. This is going to be a huge series.

MCTV has been submitting for this one for a couple of weeks. Congratulations to everyone who has scored a role so far and good luck to all!

Total Control Coming Soon

October 13, 2021/in Acting and Extras Work in Sydney /by MCTV

ABC is gearing up for the hugely anticipated return of the ground-breaking, award winning, political drama series ‘Total Control’. The second season starts on ABC TV on November 7 at 8.40pm – in the meantime get excited by watching this trailer.

In the first season, political newcomer Alex Irving (Deborah Mailman) engineered a coup against Rachel Anderson (Rachel Griffiths), the Prime Minister who appointed her to the Senate.

In season two, both Alex and Rachel find themselves treading different political paths.  After being dumped by her own party, Rachel relies on strategist Nick Pearce (Alex Dimitriades) to guide her political ambitions, while Alex finds herself surrounded by a new team, led by her brother Charlie (Rob Collins).  But politics can be a nasty business.  Will Alex’s determination and the tenacity of her grass-roots driven team be enough? Can she survive a system determined to shake everything she values?  And can these political adversaries become political allies?

In the lead up to series two, all episodes of series one are available to binge watch now on ABC iview. Series 1 included 64 MCTV members.

We can’t wait to watch this one! Congratulations to Nicole Y who worked on this as a stand in for lead Deborah Mailman.

Sydney Film & TV to rise on Helium

October 12, 2021/in Acting and Extras Work in Sydney /by MCTV

One of the industry’s top producers, Mark Fennessy has officially launched a new production company with 2 new Sydney series already planned for production in 2022. The new company, Helium, takes Fennessy back to his independent roots and aims to produce film (Helium Pictures), TV (Helium Studios) and music (Helium Records).

As reported in IF Magazine Helium’s initial projects include ‘Last King of the Cross‘, a 10 part series based on Sam and John Ibrahim’s story; feature film ‘6 Festivals’, both for Paramount+, and 6 hour miniseries ‘Sex and Thugs and Rock n Roll‘, which tells the story of Billy Thorpe in 1960s Sydney, in advanced development.

Helium is the latest venture for Mark and his brother Carl, who have a stellar track record in film and TV production. They started indie production company, Crackerjack (later merged with Freemantle and Grundy to become Freemantle Media), going on to form Shine with Elisabeth Murdoch (merged with Endemol to become Endemol Shine). They have produced hours of local drama, reality TV programs and documentaries including Australian Idol, Australia’s Got Talent, The Farmer Wants a Wife, The Apprentice, The Biggest Loser, MasterChef, Beauty & The Geek, The Bachelor, Shark Tank, The Voice, INXS: Never Tear Us Apart, Lambs of God, Catching Milat and Peter Allen: Not The Boy Next Door.

With a legacy like this, great new locally produced content and opportunities seem inevitable. More to come on this…

Season 2 of the highly-acclaimed comedy series, ‘Frayed’ has started on ABC TV and ABC iview. New episodes are dropping each Wednesday at 9pm, with catch up on ABC iview.

The show is written by and stars Aussie comedian Sarah Kendall (pictured) as Sammy Cooper – a once fabulously wealthy London housewife who is running from her past. ‘Frayed’ debuted on ABC TV in Australia and on Sky in the UK in October 2019. The series was nominated for five AACTA Awards and Kendall also garnered a BAFTA Television Award nomination for Female Performance in a Comedy Programme. It featured 83 MCTV members. If you missed it, you can catch up on Season 1 here.

18 MCTV members also appear in Season 2 which filmed here in March. Congratulations to everyone who appears.

Barons Wraps

October 2, 2021/in Acting and Extras Work in Sydney /by MCTV

Filming on ABC TV’s surf drama ‘Barons‘ has wrapped. The 8-part series, set in the 1970s, follows the story of a surf-crazed group of hippy friends who retreat from the real world to search for their ideal patch of surfing paradise. In an ironic twist their desire for ultimate freedom and the perfect wave will take them from the beach to the boardroom, creating billion-dollar empires.

Director Shawn Seet (The Code, Storm Boy) and the cast and crew navigated strict covid protocols to bring the world of ‘Barons’ to life. Emmy award-winning surf director Taylor Steele (Momentum, Momentum Generation) captured all the surf action.  You can read more about the production here.

Congratulations to the 16 MCTV members who scored roles on this exciting series, many of them appearing in multiple scenes. Barons will be an ABC TV and ABC iview must-watch television event in 2022.

Seriously Red

September 29, 2021/in Acting and Extras Work in Sydney /by MCTV

Seriously Red wrapped principal photography back in December 2020. The movie, which is directed by Gracie Otto (Unusual Suspects) stars Krew Boylan (who also wrote the script), Rose Byrne, Bobby Cannavale and Daniel Webber. It is the first feature for Dollhouse Pictures (formed by Otto, Byrne, Krew, Shannon Murphy and Jessica Carrera).

The musical dramedy follows Red (Boylan), a vivacious and hilarious red-headed woman grappling with high expectations and low self-esteem. Red trades her job in real estate to take up a new career as a Dolly Parton impersonator.

The support cast includes many familiar Aussie faces including Celeste Barber, Thomas Campbell, Jean Kittson, Wayne Blair, Todd Lasance, Sarah Su, Sophia Forrest, and Rarriwuy Hick.

MCTV members have been submitted this week for ‘pick up scenes’. These are minor additional shots used to augment the footage already shot. The film was recently awarded part of $6.5 million production funding from Screen Australia.

This looks like a really fun project to be a part of that could become a major hit and instant classic, not just here but around the world, like Muriel’s Wedding (coincidentally released 27 years ago today!!) or Priscilla.

Best of luck to everyone who has been submitted!

Congratulations to Amanda B who was paid as a featured extra and 30 other MCTV members who appear in this new ad for the Australian Department of Health’s new ‘First Things First’ campaign. Two versions of the ad have been made – one for in lockdown and one for out of lockdown which is a great sign more freedom isn’t far away. Check them out here. Great work everyone!

Despite the challenges facing filming at the moment, we are still booking and submitting. 60 teenagers have been booked on Bump series 2 this week alone.

We appreciate everyone’s patience and willingness to get on with the job and are hopeful that things will return to normal very soon.

Australian Gangster Premieres Tonight

September 13, 2021/in Acting and Extras Work in Sydney /by MCTV

Back in 2018, 85 MCTV members worked on Australian Gangster, directed by Gregor Jordan (Two Hands). Tonight, after lengthy delays caused by legal action, we finally get to see it! Australian Gangster will premier on Seven and 7Plus at 9.07pm.

The two 90 minute episode drama, which is inspired by true events, takes us into Sydney’s world of crime and gangland wars. More specifically, events surrounding the murder of “Instagangster” Pasquale Barbaro in 2016. As reported in the Sydney Morning Herald, only now, with Barbaro’s killers behind bars, is it safe to put it to air.

Channel 7 describes the series as a wild tale of ruthless ambition and revenge, set within the Sydney underworld, where gangsters and the Instagram generation collide with Sydney’s glamorous social elite.

If you can’t wait till tonight, some great BTS videos, including some footage of lead actor Alexander Bertrand being made up with fake tattoos for the role, can be found here. Congratulations to everyone involved in this long awaited project.
